Supplementation

Importance of Supplementation

Scientific studies have shown that a majority of Americans are deficient in many essential nutrients.  According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), more than 80% of women and 70% of men consume less than two-thirds of the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) for one or more nutrients (essential vitamins and minerals).  To bring more clarity to this problem, consider that the RDI merely represents the amount of a nutrient that is required daily to avoid a deficiency disease, such as scurvy or pellagra.  It is not a recommendation to achieve optimal health!  Even people who feel they eat well, or that small percentage of people who actually meet the RDI’s, may not realize their true potential for vibrant health without nutritional supplementation.

Indeed, we live in a land of plenty and have a variety of foods at our fingertips.  How is it that we eat more, yet have fewer nutrients?  The answer is eating “empty calories” –foods that contain little nutritional value.  Some common sources of empty calories include heavily processed foods, baked goods, soda, candy, and desserts.  Add to this the fact that many common aspects of daily living can deplete your body of the nutrients it needs to function properly.  Consider the following nutrient-depleting factors:

  • Alcohol
  • Antacids
  • Caffeine
  • Nicotine
  • Junk food
  • Prescription medication (diuretics, antibiotics, birth control pills, etc.)
  • Over-the-counter medications (antacids, pain-relieving agents, etc.)
  • Stress, whether it’s emotional, physical, environmental, or metabolic
  • Illness (both acute such as colds, flu, infection; and chronic such as arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, etc.)
  • Injury (trauma, surgery, childbirth, etc.)
  • Pregnancy
  • Hospitalization
  • Intestinal problems (diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, etc.)
These factors can rob you of nutrients in three ways:

 1.      They can increase the level of nutrients your body needs.

2.      They can cause accelerated nutrient losses.

3.      They can impair absorption of nutrients from your food.

When you consider all these facts, it’s no wonder so many doctors and patients alike have made nutritional supplementation a regular part of their health program.  Nutritional supplementation serves not only to maintain adequate nutrient levels, but also to help you enhance you personal health goals.

Foundational Nutrition for Overall Health

The term “foundational nutrition” refers to laying the groundwork for good overall health that will last a lifetime.  A good nutritional foundation is accomplished by providing your body with certain nutritional components that science has identified as essential for optimal health, but may be lacking in your diet.  Using supplements to compensate for dietary inadequacies will help your mind and body function at their best, whether you are tackling a big project at work, competing in sports, staying independent as you age, or simply enjoying vibrant, optimal health for a lifetime.

We will discuss “foundational” supplementation during the assessment process.

Nutritional Supplements for Specific Needs:  Targeted Supplementation

While the “foundational” supplements previously mentioned help by the groundwork for good health, supplementation can be further tailored to meet your individual needs.  There has been an explosion of scientific research regarding the use of nutrients as part of an overall therapeutic program for a variety of health problems.

Our Health Assessment is designed to pinpoint specific health concerns and identify nutritional deficits.  It involves a comprehensive questionnaire and Nutritional Physical exam.  Based on the results of the assessment, we can recommend a “targeted supplementation” protocol that will strengthen and optimize any weaknesses or deficiencies that we uncover.  For example, if poor digestion is identified, we can improve impaired digestion, assimilation and absorption of nutrients using digestive enzymes and probiotics. At the same time, we can identify and eliminate potential food sensitivities that may be impairing your body’s digestive abilities.
